Individual Therapy

Most of our clients attend individual therapy, which means you work one-on-one with your therapist to address your concerns and to improve your wellbeing. The first session is typically focused on getting to know you, as well as understanding the concerns that brought you to counseling. During your first few sessions, your therapist will work with you to create a plan for individual counseling. Our standard practice at APWC for adults is weekly 55 minute sessions, at least initially. However, you may decide to meet less often (or occasionally more often) depending on your needs and preferences. Sessions with children may be shorter and may include a parent or caregiver for part of the session.

Couples Counseling

In couples counseling, you and your romantic partner attend sessions together. Couples counseling can help in several ways. For example, couples counseling may help you improve communication, resolve conflicts, increase intimacy, and work through personal concerns that impact the relationship. The first session focuses on getting to know you and your partner, understanding your concerns, and clarifying your goals for couples counseling. Session length and frequency will vary depending on your needs and preferences. In addition, you will often be asked to practice new skills outside of sessions to increase the benefits you receive from couples counseling.

Group Counseling

In group counseling, you meet with one or two therapists and several other clients. Groups typically include 4-8 clients. Some groups are focused on a specific theme and may include psychoeducation about the common concern shared among clients. Other groups, however, are open to clients with a range of mental health concerns and focus more generally on interpersonal relationships. Through group counseling, you may improve your communication skills, realize you are not alone in your concerns, learn about how you interact with others, and increase your coping skills.
