APWC Psychiatry Services
We offer psychiatry services at Auburn Psychological Wellness Center (APWC), located in Auburn, AL. Our psychiatric care is available to both children and adults to address concerns such as:
- Depression
- Anxiety Disorders
- Mood Disorders
- Sleep concerns
- Perceptual disturbances (Psychosis)
- Gender Dysphoria
- Other mental health concerns
- Decreasing or eliminating current psychiatric medications
Sometimes medication can be helpful for managing your mental health. If medication is appropriate to address your concerns, our psychiatric providers will work with you to find a treatment strategy that fits your needs. However, we hope that you will find psychiatry services at APWC to be about much more than medication management. For example, our providers can help you identify environmental and behavioral changes that can reduce distress and promote psychological wellness. They can also talk with you about life stressors and ways in which you can better manage the stress.
At APWC we value your psychological safety and wellbeing. In keeping with this value, our providers do not prescribe substances with a high potential for abuse or dependence (i.e., controlled substances). These medications include stimulants, benzodiazepines, some anxiolytics, and sedative-hypnotics. We are happy to discuss safer alternatives for managing your symptoms of concern.
What to Expect
An initial evaluation with one of our psychiatry providers is the first step in care. At this appointment you will complete a psychiatric interview and discuss your medical, mental health, and treatment history. This appointment can last up to one hour. At your first appointment, you will receive treatment recommendations that will include a diagnosis, lifestyle or behavioral modifications, and medication options if indicated. If medication is recommended, you will receive a prescription.
After the initial appointment, you will be scheduled for follow up appointments as needed for your individual care plan. We block off 30 minutes for each follow-up appointment so that you do not feel rushed. How often you meet for follow-up appointments depends on your particular treatment needs. Your provider will check in with you about changes in symptoms and possible side effects. There is also time to talk about your progress with lifestyle or behavioral changes that support your mental health, as well as how you are coping with life stressors.
